Wenzhou Judger Garment Co., LTD.: producing masks with Vector
Judger’s more than 100 franchised stores around China sell an extensive collection of menswear that includes suits, jackets, pants and shirts. Judger insists on exceptional quality from materials to design including the final details.
Judger was founded in 1993 and has 24 years’ experience producing high quality wool suits. It has a modern, 30,000-square-meter industrial park with an annual production for wool suits of one million sets.
How did you manage to switch your production lines and production processes?
After obtaining official approval, Judger immediately contacted various resources to establish the mask production line. Those we chose had to be serious about implementing virus prevention and control measures, such as recording workers’ temperatures every day and disinfecting production workshops and other public spaces. For our part, we had to ensure that the masks we produced met quality requirements and that we could produce fast enough to meet the community’s needs.
What challenges did you face?
During the COVID-19 outbreak in China, there were a limited amount of workers in Wenzhou and they were restricted to labor-intensive manufacturing. Manual cutting obviously could not keep up with the booming demand for masks.
Also, as one of the leading enterprises in Wenzhou City, Judger was under great pressure and had to abide by mandatory Corporate Social Responsibility programs to help the government fulfil the high demand for masks and personal protective equipment (PPE).
How many masks are you currently producing?
So far, we have produced 100,000 masks. We are using three of our five sewing lines for making masks. Now that Covid-19 has been brought under control in China, we will continue producing PPE to help people and customers overseas.
How many people are working on this process?
At the most intensive time (from February to early March), 330 Judger employees were involved. That is about 50% of our workforce.
How long do you plan to continue this project?
Since the end of February, Judger devoted tremendous effort to producing the masks without any aid. Now that the pandemic has been controlled in China and logistics and economic activities have resumed, we can buy mask machines to replace manual sewing. This will enable us to increase mask production. Even though domestic demand is decreasing, Judger will continue to devote part of its production line and labour force to the production of PPE to help satisfy the demand for masks from other countries.
Did this new process cover design, HR, production, supply chain etc.?
We mainly focused on the production. We wanted to increase production efficiency and capacity in order to produce masks even though we were in the middle of an outbreak, with few available workers and difficulty buying mask machines.
Human Resources and the local government were very supportive. The leader of Wenzhou visited Judger on February 21 (the peak for COVID-19 in China) to inspect the resumption of work. He paid special attention to the production of PPE. He also gave funding and medical sterilizing equipment to help us accelerate the production of PPE.
Judger’s CEO and Human Resources manager continually communicated with workers to ensure they were in agreement to help us get through the difficult times and help Judger contribute its share to protecting people in Wenzhou, people around the world and the fight against COVID-19.
